Gotta do it. In my mind, I can’t be a true carnivalista, writing about carnivals in various countries and cultures and not experience the two most well known carnivals on the planet; Trinidad and Brazil. That’s like saying I love ice cream but I have never even tasted chocolate, vanilla or strawberry. How can I say this is good or that is the best if I haven’t been to what is considered the best to compare it to??? For me personally, my credibility can be questioned. I’ve done Trinidad, the mecca of Caribbean carnivals and loved it! Time to hit Brazil!
Rio has always been in the back on my mind. But here’s the thing. It’s going to be different. I always want to participate, not spectate. I have always thought it was just samba based. And the information I’ve received is that it is killa hard to become involved in carnival in Rio without being there months in advance, join a samba school etc.
But four people; my Brazilian film producer friend Angel, Garvey from Carnevale Network, Paula from the London School of Samba and Trinigladiata have made me think maybe it’s now time to experience Brazil carnival however I can. And even better! I was told that although Rio carnival is great, the carnival in Salvador is THE place to be and the carnival I NEED to experience. So I will be doing a week in Salvador and a week in Rio.
Between Angel and Shelly, this looks like it is going to be my second life!! Can’t wait, can’t wait!
