My heart is racing. My eyes are glued to the plane window to catch my first view of Nice. I am so excited! We get there early in the morning, around 9am. We won’t talk about about what time we had to get up to get to Gatwick airport and Nice for that time. But getting there that early meant that we had a full day to explore Cannes at our leisure before the planned events of the weekend.
We were met by the Dame du Show/Britjam team. Those who flew in for the weekender were taken by coach to the various hotels. A couple of us stayed at the Mecure Cannes, about 10mins drive from Cannes Central. I love that hotel and the staff! They were very friendly, attentive and really made several allowances for us. May also have something to do with the fact that we got upgraded immediately as we got there!
My friends came at various times in the morning so my brother and I had lunch, relaxed and waited. When they arrived, we limed in the hotel restaurant for a while, eating, catching up, talking amongst other things about Game of Thrones. Amazing how passionate we become when discussing GOT!
So we finally decided to head into town. We order a taxi and are the quintessential tourists; struggling to make ourselves understood to the cab driver ‘ nous alle.. city centre’. Between Dellian’s long lost french and my creole, we get there eventually.
Oh my first view of the ocean. The road leading to Palais de Festival runs adjacent to the ocean and I am lost in my own world smiling and gazing at the blue oh so blue of the ocean. And it continues right up until we get into town. This place is gorgeous. And right there I fell in love with Cannes.
The five of us hop off the taxi and head to Le festival, a bar right on the main road. We grab some tables on the outside, start ordering drinks, and enjoy the art of doing nothing.
We people watch, enjoy mojitos, frozen margeritas, loving the feel of the sun on our skin and really unwind. Us ladies comment on the fashion of the women passing by. The guys have other things on their minds. You can figure that out.
So there is a football match going on in the bar (Brasil vs ‘i can’t remember) and lo and behold, dancers appear dancing samba for the intermittent periods. Didn’t expect that at all. But adds to the random events of Cannes.
Others who arrived later join us in our liming. And we are there for quite a while.. And it’s fantastic but I am itching to see more of Cannes! The explorer in me needs to see more! We leave the bar to check out more of the immediate city.
We head to the marina. Wow the yachts are stunning! These beautiful machines are kept most pristine by their owners.
Some owners are on deck hanging out. One or two wave at us. I guess they are used to tourists oggling their babies!
We walk a bit further to take in the most amazing views of Cannes and the ocean. Literally took my breath away. We lingered for a long time, admiring the view, taking pictures and just enjoying the moment. Reluctantly, we head back to the hotel to get ready for the first planned event – the ‘I love London’ fete.
